District 3 Council Candidate Ken Schmid: A Tech-Driven Vision for Cecil County’s Future
In a March 30 Cecil TV interview, Republican primary candidate Ken Schmid shared his background and vision as he runs for the Cecil County Council District 3 seat. A Rising Sun resident of nearly two decades, Schmid described his family roots, community involvement, and professional career in the technology sector, emphasizing a blend of global experience and local values.
A political newcomer, Schmid said his decision to run stemmed from a desire to become more involved locally, encouraged by community members who saw his skills as a good fit for county leadership. He highlighted his experience in building partnerships and identifying “win-win-win” solutions as key qualifications.
On growth and development, Schmid advocated for a balanced approach that preserves Cecil County’s rural character while supporting strategic economic development in designated areas. He voiced strong support for farmland preservation and agreed with efforts to limit solar development on prime agricultural land, while also expressing interest in emerging energy technologies, including small-scale nuclear solutions.
Schmid emphasized innovation and forward-thinking policies, particularly in preparing the county for technological change. He pointed to opportunities in robotics, AI, and workforce training, arguing that Cecil County should better connect students with local industries and expand internship and training programs to keep young talent in the area.
On education funding, he acknowledged the challenges posed by state mandates and budget constraints, suggesting regional collaboration among school systems as a way to share costs and improve efficiency.
Schmid also underscored support for law enforcement, veterans, and youth programs, while advocating for leveraging technology to enhance agriculture and economic opportunity. He concluded by promoting a vision of “Cecil 2.0”—a county that blends traditional values with innovation and strategic growth.
