September 2025: Your monthly update on events and programs at the Library

Coming to you from the Teen Room at our Perryville Branch! We have Teen Rooms at both Perryville and North East branches. Each space is filled with comfy seating, games, activities, and tech for teens to enjoy—plus friendly staff ready to help whenever needed.
Excited to talk about September because did you know September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month?? Your library card is the most valuable card in your wallet and the most important thing you need for back to school. With it, you have free access to thousands of books, movies, music and more! It’s one card with endless possibilities!
Upcoming Programs For Our Little Ones:
• Saturday September 6th at North East we have a Japanese Swordsmanship: Kendo & Iaido Demonstration from 11-12. This is an all ages program leading up to our Taste of Japan event (which we will get into later) Experience the excitement of Japanese swordsmanship! The Baltimore-Annapolis Kendo team will demonstrate the precision, discipline, and artistry of Kendo and Iaido—traditional forms of Japanese sword fighting that combine graceful movement with deep focus and respect.
• On September 11th at Rising Sun we have Incredible Insects! From 4:30-5:30 Learn all about bugs with our friends from Fair Hill Nature Center as we explore insect life cycles and anatomy through interactive and hands-on games, activities, and demonstrations.
For Teens we have:
• September 2nd is the First Day of School so that afternoon at Perryville we have Teen Lounge: Welcome Back Celebration from 3-4:30 We’re celebrating the start of the school year with an afternoon of games, crafts and fun, ending with snacks and trivia!
• On September 23rd at Elkton they will be holding Teen Cuisine: By the Campfire from 3:30-4:15 Teens can try their hand at cooking and learn how to make fun campground favorites like hot dogs, bug juice, and s’mores.
And for Adults we have…
• On September 9th we have Intro to Podcasting at the North East Branch from 6:30-7:30 Professional host Evan Dvorkin of the podcast “Your Social Gathering” will give an introductory presentation that can serve as a beginner’s guide for people who want to start their own podcast. This presentation will cover everything from gear to recording and software recommendations for editing.
• September 13th at Elkton will hold Music in the Library: Japanese Koto from 1-2 pm
Another program leading up to our Taste of Japan event, rooted in centuries-old musical traditions, this live performance will introduce you to the expressive voice of the koto—an instrument steeped in history, artistry, and emotion.
• September 17th the Perryville Branch will be holding Chair Yoga for Mind and Body from 1-2pm Learn the breathing technique of Pranayama for stress reduction and mental clarity. Learn flexibility and posture techniques for better balance and range of motion.
Two Upcoming Big Events at the Library:
The Crab Crawl! happening Saturday, September 13th from 11-4:30 PM
Join us in downtown North East for the Crab Crawl—a delicious celebration of all things crab! Stroll Main Street and sample crab-inspired dishes at five local favorites: Forge Southern Comfort, Pier One, Bella’s, North East Yacht Club, and VFW Post #6027. The VFW will also host a Crab Art Auction and raffle with exciting prizes! Proceeds from the Crab Crawl support our Summer Reading Program and Children’s Book Festival. Taste of Japan at the Elkton branch on Saturday, September 20th from 10-2
Join us for a celebration of Japanese culture and traditions. This event brings the rich traditions of Japan to life through engaging activities, live performances, and food sampling the whole family can enjoy. We will have Taiko drumming, Kamishibai storytelling (paper theatre), a jujutsu demonstration, a kimono fashion and dressing demonstration and a shakuhachi performer, which is a bamboo flute. Super cool event, all ages are welcome and no registration required!
