LIVEFORTHOMAS Masquerade Fundraiser on September 27 to support life saving work
Michaela Ocasio shares the story behind the Live for Thomas Foundation, created in 2020 in memory of her 16-year-old brother, Thomas, who died by suicide in 2019. The foundation’s mission is to break the stigma around mental health, reshape the idea of what it means to be strong, and change the narrative surrounding suicide.
Mikayla also promotes their annual Masquerade Ball fundraiser, scheduled for September 27 at the Northeast Fire Hall, featuring raffles, music, and community fun.
The foundation offers a wide range of programs and services, including:
Mental health awareness talks in Cecil and Harford County schools, bringing in speakers with lived experience to inspire hope.
Den 22, a safe space in North East, MD, for ages 12–24, offering activities like game nights, karaoke, and gardening, along with peer support and crisis intervention.
Trainings, such as QPR and Mental Health First Aid.
Hope Squad, the first peer-led suicide prevention program introduced in Maryland schools.
Community outreach at events like National Night Out and local festivals.
They also created a documentary, I Never Thought It Would Be Him, highlighting the ripple effects of suicide, and run the “What’s Your Strong?” campaign through billboards that promote vulnerability and asking for help as real strength.
