North East Launches Expanded “2nd Friday” Season with Medieval-Themed May Event
North East is preparing to kick off another season of its increasingly popular 2nd Friday events, with a creative twist and an expanded schedule designed to bring even more energy to downtown.
During a recent Cecil TV interview, 2nd Friday Committee Chair Jennifer Goldbach announced that the 2026 series will grow to six months, running from May through October after strong community support last year. The first event is set for May 8, launching the season with a unique theme: “Medieval May Knights.”
The opening night promises a lively mix of entertainment, education, and community engagement. Visitors can expect live armored combat demonstrations from the Armored AF Foundation, an organization that supports veterans coping with PTSD through historical martial arts activities. In addition, horses dressed in medieval-style presentation will be available for photos, adding a visual centerpiece to the evening’s festivities
Music will once again play a central role in the event. Local musicians will perform throughout town, including on the front porch of Elk River Brewing, where live performances will greet visitors as they arrive. Additional music will be featured on the Green and at nearby businesses, creating a festival-like atmosphere throughout downtown
Local restaurants and shops are also embracing the theme. Merchants are planning sidewalk sales and themed menus, with some already developing Renaissance-inspired food offerings. A designated Vendor Village near Town Hall will feature a variety of vendors selling crafts, jewelry, and specialty items, while food trucks and local eateries provide plenty of dining options
The 2nd Friday series continues throughout the summer and into the fall, with each month offering a different theme. Upcoming highlights include a “Rocking Through the Decades” celebration, a patriotic July event tied to America’s 250th anniversary, a dog-themed August gathering, a September tribute to first responders, and an October finale centered on football and tailgating
Organizers say the goal is simple: bring people downtown, support local businesses, and create a welcoming, family-friendly environment for residents and visitors alike. Events are free to attend and will be held rain or shine, with indoor options available if weather becomes an issue
With its mix of creativity, community spirit, and growing popularity, North East’s 2nd Friday series is quickly becoming a seasonal staple—and May’s medieval kickoff is set to start the year on a memorable note.
