North East Library Grand Opening
The long anticipated opening of the new North East Library became reality last weekend. A crowd of eager patrons and dignitaries gathered for the ribbon cutting and a first look at the multifaceted new branch of the Cecil County Library System.
The new facility features spaces dedicated to children, teens, media creation, community activities as well as the relocated Business Information Center. Innovative seating areas and lighting abound to encourage private study and small group collaboration.
Along with the considerable excitement and satisfaction is a concern that the county executive’s proposed budget does not adequately fund full staffing of the new facility which may result in shortened hours and possible branch closures. This is a blow to an award winning library system serving a county where 2/3 of it’s citizens hold library cards.
County Executive Danielle Hornberger’s proposed budget is now under review by the county council. By law, the council has no power to increase funding for a budget item.
In the meantime, the all-new North East Library is open for business and waiting for you to check it out.
